This big difference is that we are pilots helping pilots only. This helps us have a more open-minded, insightful approach to a pilot’s finances and lifestyle when evaluating hardships because we are all peers.
People in general wonder if they qualify for help, and many don’t reach out till they are really underwater. Many aren’t aware that there is some financial education available to them, as well as counseling (non-psychiatric) that could help with going through a rough patch. And many don’t understand the importance of buy up on both STD and LTD before it’s too late to add it ie after they have already gone out on a disability. As for the evaluations, those things are discovered by just talking to them. I used to just give them a rundown of how the process works and then ask if they had questions. I believe 99% was no. So maybe that helps, put some of those comments in question form.
Each case is evaluated on its individual merits. Sometimes no money is awarded, but other times up to the maximum of $20k can be awarded. The BPF has a provision to award up to $50k in special circumstances. See the BPF Charter for more info.
Over the approximate 15y history of the BPF, it has collected from our generous membership several million dollars. However, almost all of these funds have been used to assist pilots experiencing a hardship. What has been left over has helped the Fund pay for essential items like its website and software to assist and communicate with our membership. The residual has been conservatively invested per our charter so that it is not losing value to inflation. Without continued participation from our membership, the ability to help hardship pilots would decrease over time.
Participating pilots retire and with that their membership donations stop.
If a pilot stops donations and then encounters a hardship they would be ineligible for assistance per the charter So continued participation is essential, and we thank you!
Approximately 95% of your membership dues is used to help hardship pilots. The 5%, or 5 cents of that dollar, goes to pay for website operation, IT management, necessary software, and things like tax preparation & required licensing as a 501.3(c)3 charity.
